Owner's Log- 1971 Porsche 911T Targa

First I'll begin with the story of how this vehicle came into my possession. The 1971 Porsche 911 Targa was acquired via an estate sale as a barn find along with three other vehicles, that I will share more on at a later date. The late owner had plans of restoring these vehicle for his children and grandchildren. As the present owner and custodian of these vehicles I have the obligation to restore these and get the odometers rolling once again, beginning first with the 911T.

Due to the age of the vehicle, paint condition, and unknowns on it's history over the years, I had to begin first by assessing the paint using a paint thickness meter. Inspecting various inner panel areas, including the inner driver's door panel for the paint code, it became apparent that this vehicle was originally finished in Tangerine. Some touch up paint was previously done with the new red color, and not a clear match- this will be corrected at a later date after having the color assessed with a spectrophotometer for accuracy. The primary focus here is to get the exterior and interior cleaned and as presentable as possible to serve as extra motivation before focusing on the needed mechanical work to be road worthy once more.

  • On location in the studio ready for break down and cleaning.

Aside from a color change, some blistering in the body work, and mismatched blending, the body was overall in pretty decent shape. When assessing the thickness of the paint, and after doing a foam wash removing the dust and embedded debris, it became apparent that this single stage repaint could be saved without requiring a full re-spray. The interior overall was intact with minimal tares in the drivers seat, underside dash, and center speaker dash cover.

  • Paint corrected, carpets shampooed, and all interior cleaned and rehydrated with conditioner

Lessons Learned and Pro Tip:

The before and after condition of this 911T is very clear both inside and out. Thankfully, after assessing paint thickness and condition most of the exterior was able to recovered back to a beautiful shine with removal of most scratches and swirl marks. The interior transformation cleaned up after being first chemically treated with a chlorine dioxide gas within the sealed interior, and various products to disinfect and recondition.

If you have a vehicle that is in relatable in condition new or old, it's worth an assessment, I'll be sharing additional information as I continue to work through this project.
